60 Great Short Walks Tasmania Australia - National Parks and World Heritage SitesBeach walks are a favourite relaxation for many people, and the Flinders Island walk along the beach at Marshall Bay to Castle Rock is a must-do when you are on the island. Castle Rock is a huge and very impressive granite boulder that totally dominates the beach and dwarfs those who stand near it to have the inevitable photo taken.

The walk starts near the former township of Wybalenna, one of the most important, if tragic historic sites in Tasmania. The remains of the former township include a National Trust-restored church and cemetery. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.

The 3.3km (one way) Castle Rock beach walk takes approximately 1.5-hours return. This time of course depends on the amount of beach combing, or the number of photostops taken along the way.

Generally this beach walk is considered a very safe one. However, during big seas it is advisable to keep a look out for rogue waves.
Graded at Level 2, the walk is suited for most people with reasonable fitness.

Standard walking clothes are suitable, however, you should dress for the day. Make sure that sun protection is used and that you have a jacket or jersey handy in case of a sudden change in the weather.

NO bicycles are allowed on the beach.

Facilities:
There are toilets, gas BBQ’s, picnic table and tank water available at Allport’s Beach near the start of the walk.

Vehicle Access:
From Whitemark, turn north towards Emita and Palana on B85. 17km north of Whitemark where the road splits, turn left towards Allport’s Beach. The Castle Rock car park sign is 2-kms from the junction.
